A Kitchen remodel Nightmare

Our nightmare began in early 2025 and lasted 8 months.
The kitchen drama felt like it lasted forever.
Kitchen Remodel Gone Wrong
My wife and I bought home with the idea that if we remodeled the kitchen it would be our perfect place. A place to live in till the end of our lives. Little did we know that while we did end up with an amazing kitchen, that journey to get it would be far far longer than we thought and filled with anger and unexpected costs.
We really did not know much about remodeling but we both felt that the industry was filled with untrustworthy people and that we needed to be really careful. Unfortunately, it seems that no matter how careful you are, the entire experience is potentially filled with hidden traps and problems.

We interviewd 6 different remodel companies and only one of them felt honest and like we should do business with them. They presented a great and throrough plan to match our budget and all the signs were good so we signed on board to get the work going. The guy and company that seemed the most honest proved to be the exact opposite.
we did not need a loan to make the project happen, we had enough saved up. This proved to not be a good thing. Little did we know that the plans presented to us were not sufficient for the job at hand. If we had to take them to a bank and have them reviewed for a loan we may have discovered this before the work began.
Basically nothing went as we were told. We found out right after the work began that they guy we originally met with was basically a sales guy with no real experience in remodeling. He was a good salesman, but sadly for us sold us unrealistic expectations and costs.
The expert and experienced remodeling crew seems shady and not all that experienced. They seems lazy and on some days I would swear some of them were either drunk or on drugs. You might think that stopping everything and picking another company is an easy thing to do but it is not. They had most of our kitchen ripped up on the first day. Be the second day we felt all we could do was cross our fingers and hope for the best.
Some days the workmen did not show up on time or clean up at the end of the day. Other days they simply did not show up. Costs began to increase almost immediately. We pushed back on this upon reviewing the contract we had few good options.
Sometimes materials would arrive and be either defective, broken or just the wrong items. We could never tell if they company we hired even ordered the right items for us. Delays were everwhere. The entire project took three times as long as we expected and costs ended up beging double what was budgeted.
We felt foolish and looking back I can see there were things we could have done to better our situation. Unfortunately, when you are in the middle of the mess and your anxiety is high it is difficult to think clearly. I suspect shady companies count on that.
In the end we have a good kitchen, but it was an absolutely nightmare to get. Also due to budgets sky rocketing we had to make consessions on what we got. we are happy with the kitchen today. However, it was a terrible thing to experience. It is hard to not think about it constantly as it is inside your home.
